One of the most popular features across a variety of social media applications is photo sharing. The dark side of this feature is that it encourages users to present the best versions of themselves and leads to people sharing the ‘highlights’ of their ‘perfect’ lives. This is having a detrimental effect on mental health especially in younger users who are experiencing high levels of anxiety, body issues and FOMO.
Instagram should implement a feature that labels images to show if they have been edited in some way. This would appear on posts and would help to make users aware of when an image has been altered and hopefully reduce the negative impact that other people’s posts may have on a user’s self-confidence.
